Our highly individualized school is located on the second floor of a commercial office building a few blocks from the house. Only Peak House residents attend our school. The program is run by a certified teacher, and employee of the Vancouver School Board.
Whenever possible, contact is made with the home school of each new resident before they arrive at Peak House. Contact is maintained throughout their stay at Peak House in order to ensure, as much as possible, a smooth re-entry back to their community school.
The youth and teacher will determine together what educational plan would best suit the resident's needs.
For those young people who are not in school upon arriving in the program, considerable time is spent throughout their stay exploring new alternatives. We try to ensure that every resident has a workable school plan in place upon completion of the program.
Academic instruction takes place Monday through Friday for 1.5 hours in the morning. Other school related activities include fitness (Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons for 1.5 hours); Creative Expression (one afternoon per week for 2 hours); and Community Education (2 afternoons per month for 2 hours). Creative Expression includes arts and craft type activities such as photography, ceramics, and bead work. Community Education consists of visits to local galleries, museums and post secondary education programs for career exploration.
